New Members’ Evening 2015

New Members Evening

Look out for our volunteers who will be flyering in Whitchurch this September, inviting you to our New Members’ Evening. This informal rehearsal is a chance for you to see what a Male Voice Choir is all about, and to come and workshop some new music with the choir. The choir is particularly seeking members for their Tenor 1 and 2 sections this year. Even if you don’t know if you are a tenor or a bass, come along for a sing!

Many of our members don’t read music, and rehearsal CDs are provided to help you practise your parts. No experience is necessary, and our members are from all walks of life.

If you would like to know more information – then email Emma (Musical Director)

St David’s Day Weekend

Penllyn Village Hall Concert

From the Village Newsletter:

It has been a few years since the village has played host to a male voice choir to celebrate the St David’s Day weekend. The Joint Residents & Village Hall Committee decided to organize a fund raiser event for Saturday 28th February. The great musical evening with the Cardiff Male Choir on St David’s Day Eve was held in the re-furbished Penllyn Village Hall, and included a light buffet, raffle and bar. Of course singing is a thirst-making occupation but choir members showed great control in only having a cup of tea during the intermission – under their own rule for not attending the bar until the presentations were over. Great control for thirsty Welshmen – especially after a famous win by Wales over France earlier in the evening.

The Cardiff Male Choir (formerly the Canton Male Voice Choir) was actually founded in 1898, making it one of the oldest choirs in South Wales. They are well known for their extensive repertoire including Welsh hymns and rousing arias, Jazz classics, gospel numbers, songs from the shows, choruses from the great operas and ever-favourite traditional songs. The founding of the choir stretches back to the end of the reign of Queen Victoria when a group of men met in a back room of the “Old Barley Mow”, later renamed “The Exchange”, a public house on Cowbridge Road. The current Musical Director Emma Laidlaw-Height is a trained singer with an enthusiasm for music of all genres. Emma assumed her duties in 2010 and led the St David’s Day Eve event with great skill, drawing great choral performances from the choir. The choir meets at Whitchurch Sports & Social Club, Velindre Road, Whitchurch every Wednesday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm and welcomes new members of any skill level (call Brenda Manley on 02920 255656).

As a registered charity the choir lends its efforts to community fundraising and events. So our village was very fortunate to be able to secure their support for our village projects that need a flow of funding to keep the village as a place we can be proud of and helps to serve the needs of residents. The audience showed their great appreciation for their efforts and professional approach. It was noted that there were some quite good voices in the audience when everyone was invited to sing along – clearly a village with hidden talent! A special thanks to Sir Brooke Boothby of Fonmon Castle, in the Vale of Glamorgan, who made a personal donation towards the success of the evening. Finally, thanks must go to everyone who supported the event and all of the village helpers who made the evening a success, especially: preparing the intermission buffet, stocking of the bar and donations for the raffle and also many thanks for donations from the audience – and of course thanks to everyone who helped with the inevitable clean-up. We hope to return this traditional celebration to our regular calendar of events. Why not arrange to come with a group of friends – so watch this space for St David’s day celebrations for the coming years.

‘Steak of the Art’

A Very Special Wedding

 A Very Special Wedding

On a wonderful sunny day, one of the choir’s newest choristers walked his daughter down the aisle. The choir were delighted to sing at the wedding of Cath Webber and Richard Matthams on Saturday 13th of September.

The choir performed Welsh traditional items before the service, and were later joined by the Father of the Bride. Our Chairman even joked that he had ‘turned up late, but finally made it to sing for the signing of the register!’.

Many commented on the choir’s addition to the service…

‘I love singing, and nobody does it better than a Welsh Male Voice Choir’.

‘I’m not religious, but when I heard all of the hymns being sung so powerfully, I cried’.

The Bride: ‘I can’t wait to see the DVD of all of the choir singing because everyone raved about them – and I missed it all!’.
