San Antonio Mastersingers

A superb concert in St Teilo’s RC Church last Friday with our visitors from Texas, the San Antonio Mastersingers. A lovely message from our new American friends:

“We spent the night in Cardiff, Wales and were completely humbled by the extreme hospitality of our new friends at the Cardiff Male Choir. We sang a full joint program including songs sung in the Welsh language which was a new challenge for our American singers. Together, we sang their National Anthem and they sang ours. talk about international brotherhood! Afterward, we were invited to join an “Afterglow” or after party where the libations were flowing, the food was plenty, and we continued singing into the night. This concert will likely be one of the many highlights for all of our travelers.”

Katie and Nick’s Wedding

The Choir was thrilled and honoured to be asked to sing at the wedding of Katie and Nick in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Cardiff, on the 23rd April. This was the first wedding at which we had sung since before lockdown and it could not have been a better occasion on which to return to performing in public. A beautiful bride, a handsome groom and the lovely setting of St Mary’s Church. We wish the happy couple a long and happy life together!

Cardiff Male Choir was founded 123 years ago during the reign of Queen Victoria. The choir has survived two World Wars, 24 different prime ministers and several pandemics. And after the most recent COVID 19 pandemic the choir is still singing.

After the outbreak of COVID 19, the choir had to cancel numerous performances, wedding engagements, a tour to Scotland and hosting a major American choir and regular practices were suspended.

The choir maintained contact with each other via regular Zoom rehearsals and, following rigorous Risk Assessments and Government advice, are now able to meet again indoors still observing Welsh government guidelines and wearing professional singers’ masks.

Some changes have taken place with the choir now established in its new home of Cardiff High School Old Boys Rugby Club at the Diamond Ground Whitchurch. The new Chairman is Bryan Webber and the Vice Chairman is Andy Morris. The musical team under the direction of Tim Goss remains the same.

The choir has a varied repertoire of traditional Welsh favourites, songs from musicals, modern popular songs and we are always looking to add new materials to our collection.

Cardiff Male Choir has many regular bookings at functions during rugby Internationals which are always hugely enjoyable.

A few choristers have not yet returned after the pandemic whilst some new members are adding to the strength of the choir. It is comforting to know that whilst some Male Voice Choirs are folding, Cardiff Male Choir continues through difficult times.

The choir welcomes anyone with an interest in singing, especially within a very sociable environment. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening at 7pm at the Diamond Ground, Whitchurch and you can express an interest by telephoning the Chairman on 07968 045005 or by just turning up at the rehearsal evenings.

Ron Herbert

It is with great sorrow we have to announce that first tenor William Ronald ‘Ron’ Herbert passed away on Monday 9th March. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife, Gladys. Regrettably under present circumstances we are unable to give Ron the send-off he so richly deserves. RIP Ron.
