Cardiff Male Choir Cabaret Night Success!

Cardiff Male Choir Cabaret Night

A fabulous night was had by all at the Cardiff Male Choir Cabaret evening last night. £450 was raised for Velindre Hospital, a fantastic result. Guests were entertained with items from the choir’s repertoire as well as a number of solo items performed by choir members. John and Brenda Manley performed several lovely items including ‘Love Changes Everything’ from ‘Aspects of Love’. Dr David Davies got everyone singing and clapping with a medley of traditional Welsh songs, including ‘Ar Lan Y Mor’ and ‘Sospan Fach’. Performances from Ray Mawn, George Chichester, Brain Spernaes, Terry Herring and duets from Becky Shipley and David Harrington were all fantastic, and the stories read by Ivor Morgan had us all in stitches!

All agreed that this would become an annual event for the choir. There are some photos below, with more to follow shortly.

Songs of Praise

Cardiff Male Choir were involved in a recording at the Tabernalce Welsh Baptist Church in June. Songs of Praise celebrates 50 years this year, and 3 specials programmes will be broadcast this year. The first programme was broadcast today, Sunday the 18th of September and pictures from the programme (featuring members of Cardiff Male Choir) are now on our website (see the side bar, Flikr).

Songs Of Praise was first broadcast on BBC Television on Sunday 1 October, 1961. Fifty years on, the programme – the longest running religious TV programme in the world – continues to showcase the very best in congregational hymn singing and inspirational music, featuring the very best choirs and soloists from across the UK and beyond.

In 1961 the first ever Songs of Praise came from the Tabernacle Welsh Baptist Church in Cardiff. For the first anniversary programme, Fifty Years Ago, Songs of Praise turns the clock back as Pam Rhodes returns to the Chapel to join the congregation as they sing the hymns chosen for that first broadcast. A children’s choir will also recreate the ever-popular All Things Bright And Beautiful and guest soloist Elin Manahan Thomas will perform the anthem originally sung by soprano Heather Harper. Former presenter Geoffrey Wheeler talks about his role and Sir Cliff Richard recalls life in the sixties when Songs of Praise was in its infancy.

Cardiff Male Choir join Songs of Praise Chorus

It is a little-known fact that the BBC programme started life at the Tabernacle on The Hayes, Cardiff, on Sunday, October 1, 1961, with a service conducted by Welsh composer Mansel Thomas and featuring a children’s choir singing All Things Bright and Beautiful. Half a century later, Songs of Praise is back at the Tabernacle recording an anniversary special. Choirs from around South Wales have been invited to join the songs of praise choir for the celebration and members from Cardiff Male Choir will be singing. This week Cardiff Male Choir are busy rehearsing for the television recording and the show will be aired in September.

Cardiff Male Choir Return From Scotland

Cardiff Male Choir Return From A Successful Tour In Kirkintilloch

Cardiff Male Choir performed at St Mary’s Church, Kirkintilloch to over 800 people on Saturday 2nd April 2011. They joined the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir in celebration of their 90th Annual Concert. Both choirs performed a selection of gospel songs and spirituals, songs from the musicals, classics and both choirs performed music from their homeland including a special Scottish commission. There were joint performances of Gwahoddiad and Morte Criste which were accompanied by the church’s beautiful organ. It was a long trip for Cardiff Male Choir, leaving Thursday and returning Sunday by coach but all our members agreed that it was a fantastic tour with many lovely memories and a few stories to tell!

Sally McLellan posted this to us this week:

On behalf on everyone at Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir I would like to thank Emma, David, Val the gentlemen of the choir and their partners for a great weekend.
They all made our 90th Annual Concert so memorable with their friendship and willingness to engage with the weekend. As for their performance on the Saturday night that was just breathtaking. So many good comments were and are still being made by members of the audience. Cardiff Male Choir were a credit to Cardiff, Wales and Male Voice Choral singing during their stay with us and we hope to have the opportunity to sing with them again in the future.

Yours in Music,

Sally McLellan
